Tradition and information

Home visit
‍Ancient Chinese tradition believes that the soul of the deceased will pay a home visit after death under escort by underworld officers during which his/her family should step aside. In ancient Chinese philosophy, a human soul comprises 7 parts, 3 of which belonging to the spiritual realm will ascend after death and the remaining 4 belonging to the earthly realm will descend. Based on the time of death as well as the depth of individual soul components, we will assist the bereaved family in ascertaining the date, time and direction from which the home visit will proceed.

Ceremony at 7-day intervals
According to Chinese tradition, the bereaved family will arrange worship ceremony during the 49 days after death at 7-day intervals. It is believed that a soul will be scrutinised every 7 days in underworld courts separately based on the good and evil deeds of the deceased when he/she was alive and the meritorious worship ceremony arranged by his/her family during this period may help boost these judgments in favour of the deceased and in turn be favourable towards entering a better state in the next lives during reincarnation at the end of 49 days. Since the Qing Dynasty, people usually arrange worship ceremony at the last 7-day interval (尾七) instead of worshipping every 7 days.

Feast of completion and funeral reception
The removal of white funeral clothes by family members after cremation or burial usually marks the completion of a funeral. A feast of completion (“纓紅宴”) comprising 8 non-vegetarian dishes as well as desserts will be arranged for family members and friends after attending the cremation/burial service to make good fortune and eliminate the sadness of the funeral. If the family decides to mourn for a longer period of time, for example, in the 49-days’ period after death, the family may gather for a funeral reception (“解穢酒”) involving 7 vegetarian dishes after the funeral. These dishes usually comprise winter melon and tofu ingredients, hence such combination of food referred to in daily lives resembles misfortunes and accidents.

Traditional ceremony
In Chinese funeral, the eldest son or grandson will hold a funeral staff (
擔幡) leading the deceased to ascend to heaven and practice a sanitising
ceremony (買水) resembling the cleansing of the body of the dead.

A nephew of the dead or a Taoist priest can also practice these ceremonies in lieu of the son or grandson.

Decoding a soul
In ancient Chinese philosophy, a human soul comprises 7 parts, 3 of which belonging to the spiritual realm will ascend after death and the remaining 4 belonging to the earthly realm will descend. The 3 spiritual parts that will ascend are “animus” involving energy originating from unconsciousness free of any limitations of life and death whereas the 4 earthly parts that will descend are “amina” governing one’s consciousness and desires.

It is believed that a soul will be scrutinised in underworld courts based on the good and evil deeds of the deceased when he/she was alive and the results of these judgments will determine which state to enter in the next lives during reincarnation.
